A century-long period of peace in the land of Tyramus has been broken. The peace was maintained by the four elemental crystals of Alriel, guarded over by King Lawrence and his knights, but the kingdom has fallen to the invading armies of the Jyn empire. Led by Emperor Grym, the Jyn soldiers defeated King Lawrence and sought to use the elemental crystals to rule the world. But Grym found only three crystals and also noticed that Princess Iris was missing. Enraged, he ordered his armies to search for the missing princess and recover the fourth crystal. The player must lead Princess Iris and a group of stalwart warriors in an attempt to free the land's towns from the invading Jyn armies and eventually defeat Grym himself. If Princess Iris dies, the game is over, but other members of the party can be killed without ending the game. Each character starts out with a certain set of attributes as well as a stock of hit points. Characters can level up from experience points earned by defeating enemies. The player can also buy new spells and equipment in liberated towns, or even recruit new characters until the team reaches nine characters. Every character, enemy and monster in the game belongs to one of four elements: water, fire, wind, or earth. Water element units have a strong advantage against fire element units, which have a strong advantage against wind units. Wind units, in turn, have a strong advantage against water units. Earth element units are neutral and have no bonuses or penalties. The player's characters, including Princess Iris, can capture defeated monsters to use in future fights. The characters must defeat the monsters themselves, and can hold up to four tamed monsters.
